Ryan Hemsworth Returns With Numbskull, His First Album in Eight Years

A Genre-Bending Return Pushes the Halifax Producer Into New Territory

After eight years away from the solo album format, Canadian producer Ryan Hemsworth is returning with Numbskull.

The Halifax-born artist will release the 12-track album on October 21, 2026, through Topshelf Records. It marks Hemsworth’s first full-length solo project since Elsewhere arrived in 2018.

However, Hemsworth has hardly disappeared from music. His work has continued through collaborations, production and other projects. Now, Numbskull brings the focus back to his own evolving musical world.

Eight Years Later, Hemsworth Takes a New Direction

Hemsworth has built his career by moving between genres rather than settling comfortably into one. That approach continues on Numbskull. The album reaches into trip-hop, electroclash, hyperpop and rave, while bringing a varied collection of collaborators into the mix.

For longtime listeners, that willingness to experiment will be familiar. Hemsworth’s earlier solo music frequently blurred boundaries between electronic music, hip-hop, R&B and indie pop. His catalogue includes collaborations with artists across several musical communities.

Numbskull appears ready to push that genre-crossing approach even further.

“One Step” Introduces the Album

The first taste of the new record comes through “One Step,” featuring Sarah Tudzin of illuminati hotties.

The track combines influences that might seem unlikely on paper. Hemsworth draws from Southern rap, UK hardcore and punk, with inspiration ranging from old Three 6 Mafia tapes to the energy of 1990s rave music.

That collision of styles offers a useful introduction to the thinking behind Numbskull. Rather than treating collaboration as simply adding a guest vocalist to an existing track, Hemsworth has used the album to explore unexpected musical combinations.

Tegan and Sara Join the Guest List

There is also another significant Canadian connection on the record.

Tegan and Sara appear among the collaborators on Numbskull, joining a guest list that includes Sarah Tudzin, Nana Lourdes, Allie and MSpaint. The inclusion of the Calgary-raised duo adds an interesting Canadian link to a project already rooted in Hemsworth’s own history as a Nova Scotia-born artist.

Collaboration has long played an important part in his music. His 2018 album Elsewhere, for example, featured artists including Joji, Daniela Andrade, Marco McKinnis and Elujay.

From Halifax to a Wider Electronic Audience

Hemsworth emerged from Halifax, Nova Scotia, before establishing an international reputation as a producer and DJ. His first full-length solo album, Guilt Trips, arrived in 2013. That record earned Hemsworth the Electronic Album of the Year award at the 2014 JUNO Awards, an important early milestone in his career.

He followed it with Alone for the First Time in 2014 and Elsewhere in 2018. Over the years, his production and collaborative work has connected him with artists from electronic music, indie pop, R&B and hip-hop.

The lengthy gap between solo albums therefore makes Numbskull particularly noteworthy.

A Canadian Electronic Release Worth Watching

At 12 tracks, Numbskull promises more than a straightforward return to Hemsworth’s earlier sound.

Instead, the album appears to reflect an artist interested in what can happen when musical styles and collaborators that do not obviously belong together are placed in the same room.

That makes Ryan Hemsworth’s return one of the more intriguing Canadian record releases arriving this autumn.

After eight years without a new solo full-length, Numbskull will finally arrive on October 21, 2026.
