Bill King: Life Between the Notes Toronto 2026

Bill King Brings Life Between the Notes to Toronto’s Redwood Theatre

Canadian musician Bill King celebrates six decades of music, storytelling and creativity in a special Toronto multimedia performance.

Toronto musician, composer, broadcaster and music journalist Bill King will bring his creative journey to the stage with Life Between the Notes, a one-night multimedia celebration at The Redwood Theatre on Sunday, October 18, 2026.

Combining live performances, original compositions, photography and spoken word, the evening explores the people, places and experiences that have shaped King’s remarkable career. Rather than presenting a traditional concert, the production offers audiences an intimate look at the stories behind the music.

A Lifetime of Music, Stories and Creative Expression

Six Decades Behind the Music

Bill King‘s contributions to Canadian music extend far beyond the piano. Throughout his career, he has worked as a recording artist, composer, broadcaster, photographer and music journalist, documenting the cultural landscape while creating music of his own.

His work spans jazz, blues, soul and rock, reflecting an appreciation for musical traditions and the artists who helped shape them.

King also founded Jazz Report Magazine, providing a platform for musicians and the Canadian jazz community. His decades of essays and interviews have captured the experiences of performers, industry figures and cultural personalities.

With Life Between the Notes, King brings those perspectives together, transforming years of creative exploration into a live theatrical experience.

Music Meets Movement and Storytelling

The October 18 performance will feature original compositions alongside visual storytelling and guest appearances.

Toronto-based aerial silks artist Haley Shannon will perform two routines choreographed to King’s compositions, Debussy in Paris and One Heart, One Love. A veteran aerial performer with 25 years of experience, Shannon trained at The Redwood Theatre, making the venue a particularly fitting setting for her appearance.

Vocalists Michael Dunston and Stacey Kay will also join the celebration, performing King’s human rights anthem, Brother Sister.

Together, these performances introduce additional artistic dimensions, connecting music with movement, imagery and the spoken word.

From the Written Page to the Stage

The performance also celebrates King’s book, Life Between the Notes, which reflects on the experiences and relationships that have influenced his creative life.

Drawing from approximately 45 years of essay writing, King’s observations explore jazz, blues, soul, rock and Canadian and international music culture.

The book offers another perspective on a career built around listening, performing, documenting and sharing stories.

Physical copies will be available for purchase during the event, while digital and print editions are also available through online booksellers.

An Intimate Evening at The Redwood Theatre

As Executive Director of The Redwood Theatre, King has a personal connection to the venue hosting this special presentation.

Located in Toronto’s east end, the theatre provides a setting for an evening that combines artistic performance with personal reflection.

For audiences interested in Canadian music history, creative storytelling and the connections between different art forms, Life Between the Notes promises an opportunity to experience Bill King‘s work from a different perspective.
