How a Band From Hanna Became One of Canada’s Biggest Musical Success Stories Nickelback's beginnings were considerably less glamorous than the arenas they would eventually headline. Formed in Alberta in the mid-1990s, the group developed during an era when Canadian alternative and post-grunge rock was finding a sizeable audience. Instead of arriving with an immediate major-label breakthrough, Nickelback spent its early years developing songs, recording independently and gradually expanding its reach. The band's early albums included Curb and The State. The latter helped move Nickelback beyond its regional beginnings and laid the groundwork for what followed. Then came Silver Side Up. Released in 2001, the album contained “How You Remind Me,” the song that changed Nickelback's trajectory almost overnight. Built around Chad Kroeger's distinctive vocal delivery and a huge melodic chorus, the track travelled far beyond Canadian rock radio. Suddenly, the musicians who had started in a small Alberta community were competing on the international charts. Nickelback had found its audience. Building on a Massive Breakthrough Following a song as successful as “How You Remind Me” could easily have become an impossible task. Instead, Nickelback continued producing commercially successful material. The Long Road arrived in 2003 and included “Someday,” reinforcing that Silver Side Up hadn't been a one-album phenomenon. But the band's next album would become even bigger. Released in 2005, All the Right Reasons contained an extraordinary run of singles, including “Photograph,” “Far Away,” “Savin' Me,” “Animals” and “Rockstar.” Its longevity has proved particularly remarkable. Billboard Canada's retrospective of the 21st century ranked All the Right Reasons No. 9 among all albums on the Billboard 200 for the period through 2024, making it the highest-ranked Canadian album and highest-ranked rock album on that list. It spent 206 weeks on the Billboard 200. For a Canadian rock band, that is an extraordinary achievement. Success, Criticism and Staying Power Nickelback's enormous popularity also produced one of the stranger chapters in modern rock culture. As the band's music became increasingly unavoidable, Nickelback also became a frequent punchline. Criticism of the band's sound eventually developed into an internet phenomenon of its own. Yet there was always an obvious contradiction. People kept buying the albums. They kept streaming the songs. And they kept attending the concerts. Rather than disappearing when musical trends changed, Nickelback continued releasing albums including Dark Horse, Here and Now, No Fixed Address, Feed the Machine and Get Rollin'. The band also began addressing its unusual public reputation directly. The 2023 documentary Hate to Love: Nickelback examined both the extraordinary success and the backlash that accompanied it. By then, the numbers had made the band's place in Canadian music difficult to dispute. Recognition at Home One of the most significant moments arrived in 2023 when Nickelback was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. The ceremony took place during the JUNO Awards in Edmonton, bringing the story back to Alberta. Ryan Reynolds appeared virtually as part of the induction, while Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid participated in the celebration. Nickelback closed the evening with a medley that included “Rockstar,” “How You Remind Me” and “Animals.” The honour placed Nickelback alongside generations of Canadian artists recognised for making a significant national and international impact. It remains the song most closely associated with Nickelback's transformation into an international band. “Someday” — The Long Road (2003) A melodic rock hit that demonstrated the band could successfully follow its enormous breakthrough. “Photograph” — All the Right Reasons (2005) Nostalgic and instantly recognisable, the song became one of Nickelback's signature recordings. “Far Away” — All the Right Reasons (2005) A softer side of the band and one of the album's enduring songs. “Rockstar” — All the Right Reasons (2005) Part satire and part rock fantasy, “Rockstar” became another defining Nickelback anthem. “Rattle the Cage” — Everything Under the Sun (2026) Featuring John 5, the track introduces the heavier side of Nickelback's next era. Still Rolling in 2026 More than 30 years after Nickelback formed, the band is entering another recording chapter. Everything Under the Sun arrives October 30, 2026, as Nickelback's 11th studio album and its first since Get Rollin' in 2022. The project is designed to encompass several sides of the band's musical identity, combining harder rock with melodic and more reflective material. That makes the new record more than another entry in an already extensive catalogue. Nickelback has survived changing musical trends, enormous success, cultural backlash and more than three decades on the road. Along the way, four musicians with roots in Alberta built one of the most commercially significant careers in Canadian rock. The debate about Nickelback may never disappear. Neither, apparently, will Nickelback.
