From a Halifax Basement to a Genre-Bending International Career

Canadian producer and electronic artist Ryan Hemsworth has spent more than 15 years proving that musical boundaries are meant to be crossed.

Raised in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Hemsworth emerged from the online music culture of the early 2010s. His atmospheric productions and inventive remixes quickly attracted attention far beyond Canada. Since then, he has moved between electronic music, hip-hop, indie pop, R&B and increasingly heavier sounds while collaborating with artists from remarkably different musical worlds.

Now, after an eight-year break between solo albums, Hemsworth is preparing another reinvention with Numbskull.

Finding His Sound in Halifax

Long before international collaborations became part of his career, Hemsworth was experimenting with music at home in Halifax.

He began with guitar and drums before becoming increasingly interested in recording, loops and samples. While attending the University of King’s College, where he studied journalism, music gradually became the stronger pull.

The internet proved crucial to his early development. Hemsworth connected with artists outside Halifax and began producing and remixing material that circulated through music blogs and online communities.

His work with rapper Shady Blaze led to the collaborative album Distorted in 2011. The Last Words EP followed in 2012, helping establish Hemsworth as a producer to watch.

Guilt Trips Brings a Juno

Hemsworth’s first proper solo album, Guilt Trips, arrived in 2013 through Canadian label Last Gang Records.

The record demonstrated the collaborative approach that would become an important part of his career, bringing different voices into Hemsworth’s distinctive production world. It subsequently earned him the 2014 Juno Award for Electronic Album of the Year.

He followed it with Alone for the First Time in 2014 and continued expanding his sound through solo projects, remixes and collaborations.

Collaboration Becomes Part of the Music

One of Hemsworth’s strengths has been his ability to work with musicians who do not necessarily occupy the same genre.

His credits have included collaborations or production work involving artists such as Tinashe, Mitski and Alex G. Rather than developing one easily identifiable formula, Hemsworth has repeatedly adapted his production style to the artist and project in front of him.

That curiosity has made collaboration more than a sideline. It has become an important part of his musical identity.

Numbskull Signals Another Reinvention

In 2026, Hemsworth announced Numbskull, his first solo album since Elsewhere arrived in 2018. The new record pushes his music into another unexpected collection of influences. Shoegaze, lo-fi and metal enter the mix alongside the electronic and pop sensibilities developed throughout his career.

The 12-track album also continues Hemsworth’s collaborative approach. Guests include Tegan and Sara, Nana Lourdes, MSPAINT and allie, while Sarah Tudzin of Illuminati Hotties appears on the explosive “One Step.”

Numbskull is scheduled for digital release on October 21, 2026.

Why Ryan Hemsworth Matters

Hemsworth represents a particularly modern kind of Canadian music career. He emerged at a time when geography was becoming less important to discovering new artists, allowing a young producer working in Halifax to connect with musicians and listeners around the world.

More importantly, he has never allowed early success to lock him into one sound.

From hip-hop and R&B production to dreamy electronic music and the distorted guitars of Numbskull, Hemsworth continues to treat musical reinvention as part of the process. More than a decade after Guilt Trips earned him a Juno, the Halifax producer is still experimenting — and still finding somewhere new to go.
